132 kms south of Pondicherry, along the coast, Karaikal is one of the four regions of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. It is the destination for those who seek solicite, leisure, serenity and piety.

Known from times immemorial for its rich religious heritage, Karaikal is a 'must visit' for the pilgrim tourist and the religious minded.

Among the many places of interest, the following are very popular.

  • Lord Darbaranyeswarar Temple at Thirunallar, 5 kms west of Karaikal town, is an ancient temple, housing Lord Saturn, said to be the only Saturn temple in India.

  • The Dargah of Mastan Syed Dawood, is dedicated to Saint Mastan Syed Dawood who came to Karaikal. He was a direct descendant of prophet Mohammed.

  • Nagore Andavar Dargah, located 10 kms south of Karaikal, in Tamil Nadu, this Dargah is one of the biggest Muslim pilgrimage centres in India.

  • Velankanni Church, dedicated to our Lady of Good Health, is a famous pilgrimage destination for Christians and also for people of other faiths. It is located 26 kms south of Karaikal, inside Tamil Nadu.

  • Tharangambadi or Tranquebar, located in Tamil Nadu, 10 kms north of Karikal, is a Danish settlement and has an ancient fort. This is where the first printing press in India was established.
