Chennai

Feb 24 2002

AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa said here today that her sole aim would be to make Tamil Nadu the 'No.1 State' in the country and that she would not rest until she achieved this goal.

Speaking to reporters at her Poes Garden residence after she was declared elected by a margin of over 41,200 votes, Jayalalithaa, who would take over as Chief Minister possibly late this evening, reiterated that she would fulfil all the promises made by her during her election campaign.

Conveying her heartfelt thanks to the Andipatti voters, Jayalalithaa, who turned 54 today, said the victory was the best ever birthday gift to her.

``I do not think that any political leader either in India or abroad, who has been subjected to this kind of victimisation, had to face such trials and tribulations, hardships and obstacles of this kind,'' she said.

Jayalalithaa said five years ago, several political parties had ``written me off and my party''.

``We have now proved all the critics wrong and I think this victory will serve as a lesson to everyone who may be subjected to such hardships and difficulties''.

Refusing to predict future alliances in the State, Jayalalithaa had a word of praise for the Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

``His conduct and performance during the past five months has been exemplary and he had shown a great sense of responsibility and devotion to duty. I am fortunate to have such a devoted follower.''

Asked about other cases still pending against her, Jayalalithaa said, ``whatever comes, I will face''.
