All thatched roofs of government schools in Karaikal region will be replaced by RCC before the end of 2005, Pondicherry education minister Lakshminarayan said here Thursday.

More teachers would be appointed to remove the shortage in schools in the region by next year, he told reporters here.

Steps were being taken to improve sanitation and drinking water facilities in schools, he said.

The quality of education would be improved to attract more children to government schools, he said.

He said the deficiencies found in noon meal schemes in schools would be rectified. Preliminary works for a sports stadium at Karaikal were in progress and the construction would be completed soon, he said.

Pondicherry Tourism and Education Minister K Lakshminarayan told reporters here today that Rs 31.5 crore had been proposed for Karaikal’s tourism development in the Tenth Plan.

He was on a visit to Karaikal and had a review of the expenditure during the 2001-2002 financial year in the region in tourism.

He said only 35 per cent of funds had been spent and asked the officials to gear up to implement various schemes. (PTI)
